Origins and Creative Vision

The characters of Bungo Stray Dogs were created by Kafka Asagiri and designed by Sango Harukawa. In the making of the story, character designs were developed first rather than their plot lines, as restrictions might cause characters to become too flat. The manga originated from Asagiri's idea to gather multiple famous late authors and draw them as young adults and teenagers with supernatural powers. His hope was that more people would find an interest in literature with the series.

The Port Mafia features a former executive, Osamu Dazai, who now works with the Agency. Ryūnosuke Akutagawa is a 20-year-old member and former apprentice of Dazai; he resents Atsushi because Dazai abused and abandoned him as a 'mentor.' Chūya Nakahara is a 22-year-old executive and Dazai's former partner in the combat team known as Double Black. Their past collaboration explains their current bickering, particularly regarding Chūya's height.
