He was inspired by Shūsaku Endō's Ryūgaku and specifically chose Osamu Dazai after reading No Longer Human, finding relatable embarrassment in the character's life story. Atsushi Nakajima was created as a protagonist with no personality to connect readers to unique characters around him, while Kunikida served as a third equal to Dazai.
